Locals take part in New Bedford Ballet's "The Firebird"
Local dancers will be taking part in The New Bedford Ballet's production of "The Firebird," starting Sunday, March 18.
Based on Russian folktales and the mythological Phoenix, The Firebird was originally performed in 1910 as part of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, with music composed by Igor Stravinsky. Rebecca Waskiel-Marchesseault, artistic director of New Bedford Ballet, has modified the original story to increase its educational value and family appeal, while still maintaining its original symbolism and energy.
Kathryn Sebastiao (Mattapoisett), Bailey Sweet (Marion), Camryn McNamara (Marion), Annie Tucker (Mattapoisett), Tori Castanha (Marion), and Lily Eilertsen (Mattapoisett) are featured in The Firebird."
The performance is part of the company's annual spring fundraiser on Sunday, March 18, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Community Theatre, 2343 Purchase Street in New Bedford. The ballet will be at 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. All proceeds will benefit New Bedford Ballet’s arts education and dance scholarship programs.
The New Bedford Youth Ballet will also perform The Firebird at Sippican School in Marion.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and $5 for kids.
