Long-distance field trips limited to four a year

Old Rochester Regional High School is redoing its process for planning out-of-state and out-of-country field trips, limiting them to two each per year.

Principal Mike Devoll formed a committee of staff to evaluate field trip requests “so they’re not competing for students, not competing for time and the agenda,” he said.

Each field trip must be approved by the school committee but, by having a committee evaluate each proposal in advance, the quality of trips can be better assessed, said Devoll.

“Are we just picking exotic places around the globe or is there a connection to the curriculum?” he said.

Trips will also be planned around vacations and after final exams to avoid students missing a lot of class time.

Devoll also plans on bringing requests only once a year to the school committee. On Wednesday, the school committee approved trips to Florida, Washington D.C. and Costa Rica. A trip to France was approved at a meeting last year.
