Love songs, chocolate and a Boston field trip with Marion Council on Aging

MARION — February may be the shortest month, but the Marion Council on Aging packed a number of events into 28 days. 

On Friday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m., join the Marion Garden Group at the Benjamin D. Cushing Community Center for a flower arranging workshop. The group will lead participants in making Valentine’s Day flower arrangements. There is a $5 materials charge for this class due at sign up. Space is limited, call 508-748-3570 to reserve a spot.

Then on Monday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m., Richard Hughes will lead a singalong of all the great love songs from Frank Sinatra to Tony Bennet to Nat King Cole. Join the Marion Council on Aging, sing along and maybe even dance.

On Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m., the Culinary Director from Autumn Glen will share helpful hints and tricks for making chocolate covered strawberries and pretzels to celebrate the holiday. Space is limited. Call 508-748-3570 to make a reservation.

On Friday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m., learn about “Join my Journey,” an interactive presentation designed to help families understand more about dementia. The program is designed to help families identify the different stages and common symptoms of the disease. 

The presentation will talk about the challenges of dementia and will ask participants to take a few minutes to walk in the shoes of someone with dementia. The presentation will be made by Edie Lawrence, Director of Memory Care for Autumn Glen.

Finally, take a trip to the big city with the Marion Council on Aging. On Thursday, Feb. 23 a group will head to Boston to tour the Boch Center and Wang Theatre. View memorabilia and pictures of Boston’s contributions to the music industry.

The 90-minute tour will include a Bob Dylan photography exhibit, and a chance to see items from Ernie Boch Jr.’s guitar collection. Before heading back to Marion, the trip will include a stop at The Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery. 

The tour costs $15 to sign up. The cost of lunch is not included. The tour will depart from the Marion Council on Aging at 8:30 a.m. Sign-ups begin on Feb. 9.
