Low turnout for skate park cleanup is a 'shame, shame, shame'

Jodi Bauer was not a happy woman on Saturday afternoon as she picked up trash thrown over the fence of the Mattapoisett Skate Park.

After police told Bauer that there was a surplus of bottles, plastic and other trash in the woody area between the park and the Mattapoisett Village condos, she scheduled a cleanup so that those who made the mess could pick it up.

When Bauer, a founder of the park, showed up on Saturday, she said there were nine tweens and teens, all of whom quickly skedaddled rather than help.

"I couldn't believe it. Just like fire ants," she said. "Shame, shame, shame."

Three kids did come to help, including Brady Weglowski and Rudy Arsenault. Bauer was also joined by her husband, mother and Tom Daener.

The group picked up hundreds of pieces of trash that had become tangled in the brush over the past several years.

Bauer said there would be consequences for the lack of help, which may mean locking up the park, though she said she hated to punish the kids who came to help

"I'm going to have to take it up with [Police Chief Mary Lyons]," she said.

Bauer also plans to speak with Selectmen about a better solution going forward.
