Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll visits Sippican Elementary School

May 24, 2024

MARION — About 400 kids cheered when the two black SUVs pulled up to Sippican Elementary School.

Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll stepped out of one of the vehicles as students and teachers across kindergarten through sixth grade gathered on the grass in front of the building. As Driscoll walked up the main path towards the school, the fifth grade festival band performed. Then the second grade chorus sang while Driscoll watched.

Driscoll visited the school Wednesday, May 22 shortly after touring and speaking at the construction site of Marion’s new harbormaster building earlier that afternoon.

Before departing, Driscoll told Doreen Lopes, Sippican School’s acting principal, that the work educators do “is some of the most important work,” according to Lopes.

“We’re honored and love the fact that she was here,” Lopes said.

Lopes said she found out at 3 p.m. the previous day that the lieutenant governor would be visiting the school. With the help of teachers, Lopes had less than twelve hours to plan for the entire school to greet Driscoll in front of the building with band and chorus performances.

The student music groups did an “amazing job,” Lopes said.

After the second graders sang, Driscoll and students exchanged high-fives.

Marion School Committee member April Nye said students were excited that the lieutenant governor took the time to come to Sippican School.

“Just a great opportunity for the town and kids and for the teachers to be recognized for what they do,” she said.
