Man in custody following overnight search in Mattapoisett

MATTAPOISETT — Mattapoisett Police arrested a man on the night of Saturday, Sept. 29, following reports that he left his home carrying a firearm. Residents were asked to remain inside and lock their doors near the Fairhaven town line while police conducted a search of the area.

According Mattapoisett Police Chief Mary Lyons, the department received a call at approximately 8:20 p.m. from a resident on Fairhaven Road who reported a domestic disturbance at a neighbor’s home. 

The Mattapoisett Police Department responded to the call with members of the Fairhaven Police Department. Officers from Marion and Acushnet also responded and set up a perimeter around the home. 

Mattapoisett Police were assisted by the Massachusetts State Police Airwing, which conducted an aerial search for the man. In addition, the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council regional SWAT team responded to the scene, along with K9 officers from the Plymouth and Bristol County Sheriff Departments. 

The man returned to his home at 2:20 a.m. on Sunday and was taken into custody by the Mattapoisett Police. Following a search of the home, several containers were found with ammunition of varying calibers. 

The man, who has not been named, is being held at the Plymouth Country House of Correction. He was arraigned on Monday at the Wareham District Court.
