Marion adopts solar permitting fees

Jun 18, 2014

With the addition of solar guidelines to the town’s bylaws, Building Commissioner Scott Shippey presented Selectmen with new permitting fees to go accompany them.

Shippey proposed $100 for the first four solar panels on a commercial project with $3 per panel after that. For residential projects, the cost proposed is $60 for the initial four panels and $2 per each additional panel.

The building commissioner said he reviewed other towns and chose a middle ground. He also said he would do at least two inspections of any solar site.

Selectman Stephen Cushing said he didn’t want to make the costs too expensive.

“There’s no sense in pricing everything right out of reach,” he said.

Shippey responded that the fees for a homeowner were not too expensive.

“For the regular person, it’s not unreasonable,” he said.

Selectmen voted in favor of the new permitting fees.
