Seeing their artwork hang in a real, honest to goodness art gallery was a pretty exciting experience for Sippican School students.

“I think you can see it on their faces. They're super jazzed,” art teacher Erin Kirk said at the Marion Art Center opening on Monday.

Kirk chose around 100 pieces of artwork from her students, grades kindergarten through sixth grade. The pieces reflect the students' assignments, from emulating famous artists such as Andy Warhol to learning about the color wheel.

She said the show is important for the kids, who see that their work has value. It's also a way for residents who don't go into the school to see what the children create.

“It's great for the community to see what they're doing,” said Kirk.

The kids were happy to talk about their artwork.

Ella Shannon pointed out her painting of a purple flower, which was inspired by something Kirk showed them. But, Shannon said, “I added my own thing.”

Lucia Valadao's “Blue Dog”-esque painting had rainbows and shamrocks.

“It was inspired by St. Patrick's Day because I really love rainbow colors and my favorite color is green,” she explained.

Jacob Nye was excited that his woven and painted paper piece could double as a checker board.

“When we get home, you can actually use it,” he said.

The artwork won't be heading home soon, though. The exhibit will be in the Marion Art Center's upstairs gallery through March 11. Visit during business hours, which are listed at marionartcenter.org.
