Marion Art Center opens doors to holiday shoppers
Holiday spirit is in the air, and the Marion Art Center has again transformed itself from an artists’ gallery into a festive shop.
Many people started their holiday shopping at a gala opening the center hosted on Nov. 22. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the holiday shop, which promotes local artists and raises funds for the not for profit.
More than 30 artisans set up displays in the center’s two galleries. Items for sale include limited edition gifts in ceramics, fiber, wood, scrimshaw and more.
Artists Mary Monteiro sold scarves she paints by hand.
“Each of these scarves are one of kind,” said Monteiro, of North Dartmouth. “Even if I wanted to duplicate a design I couldn’t. I’ve tried.”
She uses eco-friendly fabrics and water-based paints. “I keep the process as natural as possible,” she said.
The ethos extends to her business name, Avani Original Art. Avani is Sanskrit for “mother earth,” she explained.
To create her free-flowing designs Monteiro starts by stretching the fabric, usually silk. Once taut, she applies the paint and sometimes uses an additive such as salt to achieve the look she wants.
When artists make a sale 75 percent of the cost goes to the artist, while the center receives the remaining 25 percent, said the Executive Director Deborah Bokelkamp.
Looking ahead, Bokelkamp noted the center’s bi-annual members show will start on Jan. 10.
Until then, residents can shop for gifts and support the center with a purchase. The Marion Art Center’s holiday shop hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free. The center is located at 80 Pleasant St., in Marion.
