Marion Concert Band ends summer on high note
The Marion Concert Band played out the summer with music from composer John Williams and the Boston Pops.
On a pleasant Friday evening, the band performed its final concert of the season starting at 7:30 p.m. Conductor Tobias Monte said this was the first season the concerts were held on Friday nights since 1987. In previous years, shows took place Monday evenings.
Monte has led the band since 1985. He said the move allowed more community members to attend.
“In summer, a lot of residents are away during the week. The audiences have been bigger this year. It worked out well,” Monte said.
Each year, band members perform nine shows. The concerts have a theme and are free for the public.
The band is composed of accomplished musicians from the tri-town and other South Coast communities. Often, musical selections required a high degree of proficiency. Also, the performers must learn a variety of different selections week-to-week, Monte said.
This year, the weather cooperated for the most part and only two shows were cancelled due to rain. Monte said the band, and the community, are looking forward to next year.
