Marion earns $215,000 in grants for sewer study, electric car

Marion will move forward with an application to apply for an electric car and study a sewer connection for an Aucoot Cove neighborhood, thanks to $215,000 in grants.

Selectmen learned of the two grants during their Tuesday night meeting.

“It’s good news all around,” Town Administrator Paul Dawson said.

The Department of Environmental Protection awarded the town $15,000 to acquire an electric car and charging station to be used by a town department, yet to be named.

Members of the town’s Energy Management Committee approached Selectmen with the proposal in the fall after seeing the success of a similar program launched in Dartmouth.

The $200,000 awarded through a New England Water Quality Management grant will be used to study the cost of expanding sewer service to Aucoot Cove residents and a neighboring area in Mattapoisett.

The purpose of the grant is to see if a sewer connection will reduce the amount of nitrogen leaching into Buzzards Bay.
