Marion finalizes transfer station use for Rochester residents
MARION — Rochester will have a new home for its excess garbage come the new year.
Selectmen voted to approve a shared use of Benson Brook Transfer Station with Rochester for the purposes of disposal of excess trash at a Dec. 15 meeting.
“I think it’s a good way to work with Rochester,” Selectman John Waterman said. “We have a good relationship with them.”
Stickers allowing Rochester residents to use the transfer station will cost $50 dollars for seniors and $60 for other residents, $10 more than the Marion price. 600 stickers will be made available for Rochester residents.
“I think for what we’re doing, 40 or 50 dollars is actually a good price,” Waterman said.
The shared use will be a one-year agreement, and comes as Rochester is in talks with Wareham over use of the Rte. 28 transfer station, which is located in Rochester, but operated by Wareham.
Rochester Selectmen finalized their end of the deal with Marion at a Dec. 7 meeting, but Marion Selectmen officially approved the shared use at the Dec. 15 meeting.
Town Administrator Jay McGrail said the transfer station needs to be used properly, and was adamant that no construction debris be brought into to the station.
Only lawn waste and excess household garbage will be accepted.
