Marion General Store opens doors despite weather

Jan 27, 2015

It takes more than a blizzard to shut down the Marion General Store.

Despite high winds, heavy snow and a statewide travel ban, store owner Jack Cheney said if the power stays on he’ll keep the store open until 5:30 p.m. for weather weary customers.

“There hasn’t been a whole bunch of people coming in,” Cheney said. “The ones who do are grateful. We’re here for folks.”

As of 10 a.m., more than 1,000 NSTAR customers were without power. According to NSTAR, power had been restored most customers by Tuesday afternoon.

The severe weather caused Gov. Charlie Baker to ban non-essential motor vehicle travel that is still in place across eastern Massachusetts. Snow is expected to continue until evening.

The ban didn’t apply to Cheney who walked one mile from his home to open up shop.

And for those who don’t need supplies, but want to combat cabin fever, Cheney said he’d welcome the company.

“Be safe, but if you are out stop by for hot coffee, storm supplies and a little blizzard chat,” he wrote on the store’s Facebook page.
