Marion hit by Irene, power outages could last through the week
Power could be out in Marion for up to seven days said Police Chief Lincoln Miller, who is also the town's Emergency Management Director.
The Townhouse was closed as of Monday morning.
"The majority of the town is currently without power," said Miller. "Some patches have it, mostly on the east side near Wareham and the north side near Rochester."
This leaves most homes and even the street lights on the corner of Front Street and Route 6 without electricity.
"There were an awful lot of trees taking power-lines down," said Deputy Emergency Management Director Dale Jones. "Power could be out for an extended period of time."
"We contacted NSTAR and they're working on the situation," said Miller, adding that NSTAR will begin the work on main circuits before moving to the smaller ones, a job that could take several days. "We're hoping to have the largest areas of town back on rather rapidly."
The Marion Emergency Operations Center fielded 135 calls yesterday related to storm damage caused by Tropical Storm Irene. Downed trees caused the most damage and a small number of boats got loose from their moorings.
"We were on standby 24/7 since Friday night," said Jones.
"Overall, not bad," said Miller, describing the extent of the damage and noting that it could have been much worse.
Tropical Storm Irene was downgraded from hurricane status before it hit the region.
