Marion Mile gets kids running for 11th year

In its eleventh year, the Marion Mile has established itself as a tradition that keeps kids from hitting a summertime slump.

The one-mile race around the grounds of Tabor Academy began its seven-week run on Tuesday, June 26 with at least 100 kids. That number is expected to more than double over the summer, said the event's founder and Tabor track coach, Chris Adams.

Adams said he started the race after his son complained that his legs hurt after running the Marion Village 5K, a race Adams also organizes.

The Mile has grown exponentially since its first summer when it averaged 20 kids to last year’s 240.

Adams decided to create the shorter race as an "off-shoot" to help kids develop a love of running and work up to endure longer races.

“It’s one of the most enjoyable things I do,” said Adams. “The little kids are so much fun. They get so excited about it.”

Adams also said Wareham Pediatrics, the sole sponsor for the run, has been very helpful with the cause to get kids active.

"They're big on fighting childhood obesity," he said.

The Mile is run in two parts with kids ages seven to 14 running a full mile, followed by a half mile run for children six and under.

Amanda Meyer said one of her sons was adamant about participating in the races this year.

“In August he said, ‘I never got to do the Marion Mile,” said Meyer. “He was heartbroken.”

Sue Shannon brought kids Ella, four, and Billy, five, for their second year of races.

“It allows them to be part of a fun team,” she said. “It’s good for them to have exercises as part of their lifestyle.”

After his half-mile run, Billy was happy with his accomplishment.

“I was tired, but I ran so fast.”
