Marion officials seek contractors to repair collapsed Natural History Museum ceiling

Aug 8, 2012

It’s been two weeks since the ceiling of the Marion Natural History Museum collapsed and with the clean up complete, town officials look to financing options for the repairs.

Town Administrator Paul Dawson said that the town would go out to bid with interested contractors to take over repairing the museum’s ceiling, which fell on July 23.

Dawson said that the town has been approached by a local contractor who would complete the repairs at a reduced rate. Due to state procurement laws, however, Dawson said that unless the contractor pays for the entirety of the project, the town must open the project to other interested contractors and select the best offer.

“Our hands are cuffed here,” Dawson said.

While officials weigh the options, the museum’s summer programs, usually held in the museum on the second floor of the Elizabeth Taber Library, will continue to be held at the YSI building on Atlantis Drive.

Once the school year starts in September, the Selectmen suggested that the museum’s after-school programs move to the Sippican School’s community room.

Dawson said he would submit a request to Sippican School Principal Lyn Rivet.
