Marion Recreation Department welcomes new summer programs
The Marion Recreation Department is accepting registration for their summer programs. This year features a number of new offerings for local residents.
Horseback riding
The Horsemanship Program will consist of learning the basics of horse handling, safety and horse care, as well as a riding lesson for beginners and more advanced riders.
The lessons will take place at Washburn Park on Wednesdays beginning August 1 and will run until August 22.
Class times are 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. or 12 p.m.
All instructors are state licensed riding instructors.
There is a registration fee of $200.
Movies in the Park
Marion Recreation will host movie nights throughout the summer on the lawn at Island Wharf.
The films will be shown on Wednesday nights beginning July 11 at 7 p.m.
The first film will be “Jaws.”
Admission is free, and there will be refreshments available.
Junior Scientist Mixology Camp
Instructor Temple Mitchell will run a junior scientist mixology camp for students entering grades 1 through 3.
The camp will be at Silvershell Beach and will run Monday, July 9 through Friday, July 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
At camp, students will experiment with a varity of chemistry, biology, ecology and geology hands-on activities.
Each day will have a different theme.
There is a maximum of 10 students allowed to join, so register soon.
The cost is $90 per student.
Art Classes
Sippican School art teacher Erin Kirk will instruct several art courses throughout the summer.
Week one will be “Creating with Clay I,” for ages 5 to 9 and “Creating with Clay II,” for ages 9 to 13.
The course will run from June 25 to 29.
Students will create a variety of projects including pinch pot bells, coil built pencil holders, puzzle boxes and animal rattles.
Week two will be “Mimicking the Masters,” which will run July 2 to 6 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The course is for ages 5 to 9. Each class, students will focus on a different artist, learn about art history and create their own work.
For ages 7 to 13, week two will offer “Fiddling with Fibers,” which will run from July 2 to 6. There will be no July 4 class for either of the week two courses.
Each class, students will try out a different technique used in fiber arts including stitching, felting, batik and weaving.
Week three will offer “Amazing Animals” and “A Plethora of Printmaking”, which will both run July 9 to 13.
All classes are held at the Sippican School. The cost is $85 per student.
