Marion Recreation director announces Selectman candidacy

Jody Dickerson, Marion’s Recreation Department director, has announced his candidacy for the Board of Selectmen.

The decision, which Dickerson said he made in the fall, follows Selectman Roger Blanchette’s announcement Jan. 18 that he would not seek re-election.

“I observed a real disconnect between the Selectmen, committees and townspeople at spring’s Town Meeting,” he said. “I saw it at fall’s special Town Meeting too. This office is so important. You have to have that connection.”

Dickerson, a Marion native, returned to the town about a year ago after living in Plymouth, New Hampshire, where he also spent time as a Selectman. Prior to his move, he has served as a Selectman and various board and committee members for Marion, as well as a police officer.

“I know how thankless this job can be,” Dickerson said. “But it’s also rewarding to serve the community. I think there are a few people now that have hidden agendas. I don’t want to see that. We have to work in the interest of the community, not select individuals.”

Dickerson also said he wants the numerous boards and committees to work in unison, as well has tackle a maintenance problem on town facilities.

“Marion is not unique in that our facilities get neglected,” he said. “We have to look at the problems and act now. How will we pay for a Town House renovation, and how will we keep it maintained? This is something we have to work toward.”

Marion’s elections are May 25.

“Politics are local,” Dickerson said. “You can get more work done. I want to work hard and give back.”
