Marion Recreation, Sippican School partner for after-school program
Come September, the Sippican School students will have a new after-school program to keep them busy with a variety of activities from kickball to board games.
On Wednesday, the Marion School Committee gave its support to the program, which will be run as a collaboration by the Marion Recreation Department and the Sippican School.
“The children need activities to do once the school day ends,” said Principal Lyn Rivet. “This would be a full-blown, energetic after-school program.”
The program will begin in September and will run for one hour a day, four days a week. There will be a number of activities offered, which would vary depending on the ages of the kids enrolled, said Recreation Director Jody Dickerson.
Dickerson said he previously ran a similar program in New Hampshire.
“It was a great program,” Dickerson said. “There was a lot of student improvement in school. The teachers would say that the kids would come to school energetic and looking forward to the after-school program.”
Dickerson added that the kids would be broken up into groups based on ages, which would be supervised by Recreation Department staff. There will be a fee of $10 per day for each student enrolled.
Of the program, School Committee Chair Brad Gordon said, “It sounds like a great opportunity.”
