Marion resident built Little Free Library, hopes to install it in Music Hall

Charlie Bradley has always been into woodworking. And to keep busy, he is always working on a new project in his workshop.

Recently, Bradley completed a cabinet shaped like a house, with two shelves and a glass door. His plans are to fill it with books and put it in the Music Hall for Marion’s second Little Free Library.

The first library, on Planting Island Road, has been in Marion for over five years.

The Little Free Library idea is a grassroots initiative that began in 2009, and there are currently over 40,000 locations worldwide.

A Little Free Library can be put outside or inside a public building and people can leave a book and take a book to read. Bradley said to start off, he and his wife will stock the library.

“I like to do my reading from magazines and my wife likes to read books, so we’ll have it full when we install it,” he said.

A former harbormaster, Bradley said he has a lot of books about lighthouse from working on the original Bird Island restoration and thought that would be of interest to summer visitors.

Seasonal visitors and boaters are part of the reason Bradley decided the Music Hall would be the perfect location.

“Boaters who spend days on their boats can exchange reading material when they come ashore to come to the General Store,” he said.

The other reason he thought the Music Hall would work is because so many senior citizens frequent the building for Council on Aging activities.

Bradley said he got the idea after reading about it in a woodworking magazine and decided to take it on as his next project.

“I built a little here and a little there until it was finished,” he said. “Every now and then I get an idea like this.”

The Selectmen approved the project at the Nov. 1 meeting, and said they would make sure the Facilities Department would help Bradley install it in the right place.
