Marion School Committee adjusts budget request

Apr 10, 2015

The Marion School Committee is seeking a modest increase for Sippican School’s fiscal year 2016 budget.

On April 1, the committee approved a budget of $5,634,987, which is a $26,721 increase compared to the previous year.

That represents a 0.5 percent increase.

“If we’re coming in at under half a percent that’s going to probably be the lowest budget in the whole town,” Chair Joe Scott said.

Despite the small change, administrators were able to increase the hours of the assistant principal and hire an enrichment specialist.

Last month, Superintendent Doug White proposed a budget that was $140,000 more than what was approved.

With town finances strapped, officials asked White to use funds from the school’s circuit breaker account. The fund provides reimbursements for some special educations costs from the state.

Since special education costs fluctuates from year to year, the Department of Education encourages districts to keep some money in the account.

White said $140,000 was used from the circuit breaker account for the school budget. The decision leaves $65,000 in the circuit breaker account.

Business Administrator Patrick Spencer said the school is projected to receive $90,000 in circuit breaker reimbursements the following year.

Committee members thanked administrators for the hard work.

“It’s wonderful to see everything that’s in there, and that it’s financially responsible,” said committee member Christine Marcolini. “We added some things that we definitely needed to add back in.”
