Marion School Committee discusses 2014 budget increases

Mar 7, 2013

Next year, the Marion school budget will see an increase of $126,521, or 2.31 percent, over the current year to meet contractual obligations with staff.

On Wednesday, the Marion School Committee reviewed the $5.6 million budget, which was drafted by the committee’s budget sub-committee.

Superintendent Doug White led the public hearing on the budget.

“We were able to drill deep in the budget. What’s in the budget is what is necessary to provide quality education in Marion,” White said.

Besides contractual obligations, other increases include $11,596 for supplies such as textbooks and equipment.

However, the 2014 budget will also see reductions. A fewer number of students attending a vocational school will result in savings of $19,501.

Under the regional school district agreement with the three towns, each town is responsible for paying an assessment of the Old Rochester Regional budget. The towns’ assessment is based on student enrollment.

Of the proposed $16.8 million budget for the ORR Junior and Senior High Schools, Marion is responsible for 28 percent, or $3.6 million.

The committee agreed to review the budget over the next month. Once the School Committee approves the proposed draft, the budget would then go to May Town Meeting for final approval.
