Marion School Committee receives budget help from town
Budget woes for the Marion School Committee have had a more “positive development,” says committee Chair Brad Gordon.
On March 7, Gordon said that the town’s Board of Selectmen and Finance Committee have offered to include additional funding for the school from the town department’s 2013 budgets.
Though the budget for the coming school year is calling for increased costs of $430,000 to meet with special education service needs, contractual obligations, and an increased number of students attending vocational school, Gordon said the town’s help has made a major difference.
“The budget is still challenging but not as challenging due to the help from the town of Marion to address some of the increased costs,” Gordon said. “The direct impact on the school is less than what we expected with the assistance from Marion.”
So far, the $430,000 in increased costs has been lowered to $394,170 with the help of the town’s officials.
During the February 1 school committee meeting, the budget subcommittee members presented a draft of the budget that called for both service and staff cuts to accommodate the increased costs.
Now that the town officials have offered their assistance, Gordon says the budget will have to be reviewed and could potentially include less cuts in services and staff.
“We understand that people in this community are hungry for details and we’d like to give specific details, but this information is so new that we haven’t had a chance to review it,” he said.
Gordon said that the budget subcommittee would meet within the next week to review the new information for the 2013 budget.
After the subcommittee has met, they will hold a public hearing sometime before April. The date has yet to be determined.
In April, the School Committee will have to approve a draft of the budget to send before May Town Meeting for approval.
