Marion school officials prepare for state evaluation

Sippican School staff and administrators are preparing for an evaluation by the Massachusetts Department of Education in October.

On Wednesday night, School Committee members learned that the school will be the first in the tri-town to be visited.

Director of Student Services Michael Nelson said the audit is scheduled for Oct. 7, 8 and 9.

Nelson said a self assessment was completed earlier in the summer. Currently, he’s working alongside Principal Lyn Rivet and Assistant Principal Sarah Goerges to prepare staff for the evaluation.

Special education rules, English language learners and civil rights are all areas that will fall under scrutiny, he said.

Following the evaluation, results will be made public later in the year.

“We don’t anticipate getting the report until March or April,” Nelson said.

In December, all of the school districts within the tri-town will participate in an exit interview with the Department of Education following the evaluation.

School Committee Chair Christine Marcolini praised Nelson for spearheading the process.

“Thank you for all you’ve done and will do for that review,” she said. “Any areas of need will be identified.”
