Marion Selectmen discuss new fiscal year
The Marion Board of Selectmen met with the department heads, the Finance Committee and the Capital Improvements Planning Committee on Thursday evening for a special meeting to discuss budgeting for the new fiscal year.
The new fiscal year started July 1, and Town Accountant Judy Mooney praised the departments for being on track with the outlined fiscal plan.
“I think we’re going to close the year on target for the fiscal year 2016 budget,” Mooney said.
Department heads also had the chance to share any capital expenditures they are anticipating for the 2017 fiscal year, as well as what they think their budget will be going to.
Harbormaster Isaac Perry said his department’s capital projects are relatively light, they just need to get electronic upgrades for all the boats. Looking forward to the future, he said the department is “desperately in need of space,” so in the next few years he will look to bring that up as a capital project.
Doug White, Old Rochester superintendent, said the school is hoping to make some safety related improvements to the high school and junior high. He’s hoping to upgrade the security systems and cameras, as well as make it more difficult for people to enter the school without first signing in at the office.
Fire Chief Brian Jackvony said the Fire Department is looking to spend money on a variety of things, particularly new portable and mobile radios and new thermal imaging cameras.
For most departments, their budget will just go to routine maintenance and operations.
The Selectmen wants to have these meetings quarterly so everyone can know what is going on in other departments.
“Having more communication helps everything run more smoothly,” Selectmen Chair Jody Dickerson said. “We have to work as a team, we’re all team Marion.”
