Marion Selectmen plan for Town Meeting, Memorial Day, facility renovations

Apr 28, 2020

MARION — At an April 28 video meeting, Town Administrator Jay McGrail gave updates on the town’s response to coronavirus, including the possibility of Town Meeting taking place on June 22 at Sippican School and Tabor Academy.

In previous meetings, he discussed the idea of holding the meeting while keeping residents at a safe distance in classrooms around the school. Using space at Tabor Academy, the town will be able to have more people at the meeting.

For Memorial Day, McGrail has cancelled this year’s parade but will organize a video tribute to veterans.

Since Governor Charlie Baker has extended his stay-at-home order, Town Hall will be closed until May 18. McGrail is working on installing plexiglass shields at desks so that the staff can maintain social distancing in the workplace, allowing more people to work in the building.

McGrail said that the town hopes to get more staff in the building on May 18 because it “needs to get back to a little more normal.”

Energy Management Committee member Bill Saltonstall, Town Planner Gil Hilario and Town Facilities Manager Shaun Cormier also presented 2020 projects it will take on if it receives a third Green Community grant of $115,738.

Because Marion is designated as a Green Community, the grant helps pay for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.

Projects include installing an air conditioning system in the community center, installing interior storm windows in the library, and adding insulation to multiple town buildings.

Saltonstall said that the committee worked with Cormier to identify large capital projects in the town to work on so that it could “get the most value out of it [the grant] and help the town.”

Although it still has to apply for the grant, Hilario said that the town has a good chance of getting the full amount of money that it requests.

To qualify, the town must reduce its energy consumption by 20% over five years. In the town’s second year, it has only decreased its consumption by 2%.
