Marion strolls into the holiday season with ‘wholesome’ gathering

MARION — Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right through Sippican Harbor.

St. Nick strayed away from his typical method of transportation on Sunday, Dec. 8, arriving at town wharf aboard a tugboat to greet a sea of starstruck children and kick off Marion’s annual Christmas Stroll.

Claus, accompanied by Mrs. Claus, then hopped onto a carriage led by clydesdale horses for countless laps around the village with groups of kids.

The carriage rides were just one of the many attractions at the stroll. Live music, a petting zoo, arts and crafts and shopping kept the buzzing crowd busy.

Attendees stopped at various tables and stands for free food and warm beverages served by local businesses and organizations.

Nancy Ross, who spent the afternoon serving up prosecco mixed with cranberry juice at Kate’s Simple Eats, said the stroll is a great part of living in a smaller town.

“This is how I grew up,” said Ross. “Parades were everything. I look forward to the Christmas Stroll every year like crazy.”

Ross said the stroll was a wholesome, old fashioned gathering that gives off a great sense of community.

Marion residents Deb and Terry Watson attended the stroll with their two dogs, Lindy and Lily.

Deb Watson said the feeling of camaraderie is what stands out about the stroll. She said Marion businesses do a “wonderful” job of helping out which shows the culture of the community.

Terry Watson said he believes the stroll is so well-attended because it helps everyone get into the Christmas spirit each year.

Lindy and Lily did not respond to requests for comment.

The hundreds, potentially thousands in attendance kept on strolling as darkness came upon the cold, cloudy day. A tree lighting at the bandstand capped off the festivities.

Marion resident Sylvia Strand said the Christmas Stroll is an event that makes Marion a special place.

“Where else do you see Santa arrive on a boat?” said Strand.
