Marion student snags lead 'Mary Poppins' role

Ten-year-old Nolan Gibbons didn’t know what he was auditioning for when he went to the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket, Rhode Island last July, but he walked away with a lead roll.

“I found the audition notice online and it was very mysterious,” said his mother, Sheila.

The play turned out to be the Broadway musical “Mary Poppins” (not announced for royalty reasons).

Nolan, who frequently breaks into a British accent, had his fingers crossed that it would be the famous musical.

He said to himself, “If this is ‘Mary Poppins’ I can talk in a British accent. I’ll nail that!”

A fifth grader at Sippican School, Nolan is a born performer. He’s part of the South Coast singing group Showstoppers, has participated in tap and singing classes and had a minor role in Boston’s "Urban Nutcracker" last December.

The large-scale production was Nolan’s first time on such a grand stage, and he loved it.

Over the summer he participated in a children’s workshop and play at Priscilla Beach Theatre in Plymouth, and of course, auditioned for “Mary Poppins”.

The day after his audition, he got a call saying he had landed the part of Michael Banks.

As one of two lead children's roles, Nolan rarely finds himself waiting in the wings.

The commitment, including rehearsals to which his mom and dad, Warren, drive him do make for some long days for the elementary school student.

Sheila said she tries to help her son maintain a balance.

“I want to make sure school is most important, that he’s doing his homework, that he’s sleeping,” she said. “But he has so much fun with this, it’s hard to not let him do it. Other kids have their sports or other activities, this is his thing.”

With a show full of songs to learn and many lines, it’s been nonstop “Mary Poppins” at the Gibbons’ home since July, but Nolan said he’s learned his part well and he's loving the experience.

“I will never not enjoy acting,” he said.

"Mary Poppins" will be performed Oct. 16-18 and 23-25. For ticket information, visit www.stadiumtheatre.com or call 401-762-4545.
