Marion students show heart for fundraising effort

Sippican School students were seeing red on Friday afternoon.

They weren’t mad though – quite the opposite. Students were happy to wear red clothes and donate money to the American Heart Association.

Students raised $1,025 to help heart association programs. First grade students Shaun Miranda and Ella Ferguson had the honor of making the announcement at an assembly before the entire school.

“This is great because it teaches kids about doing things for others,” said Karen Clark, an assistant first grade teacher. Inspired by the success of the school’s “Think Pink” spirit day, Clark organized the fundraiser for the heart association.

During “Think Pink,” students were asked to bring in money to support the Susan G. Korman Foundation’s efforts to cure breast cancer.

Principal Lyn Rivet said she was pleased to look out at a “sea of red” at the start of Friday afternoon’s assembly. She introduced Shaun and Ella before they made the announcement.

“They are going to show us the kind of good things that happen when we get together,” said Rivet.

First grade teacher Jean Roseman said students made posters to raise awareness for the fundraiser. They also counted the money that was collected. She thanked Clark for putting the fundraiser together.
