Marion Town House, library flooded during storm

Three municipal buildings were flooded on Tuesday afternoon after a severe thunderstorm struck.

The basements of the Town House, Elizabeth Taber Library and the Marion Recreation Department filled with several inches of water following a sustained downpour.

“The rain came down so fast and furious the storm drain in the parking lot couldn’t handle it,” said Marion Town Administrator Paul Dawson.

The storm, which started at approximately 4:15 p.m., also flooded parts of Front and Spring Streets and Route 6.

Marion and Rochester first responders were called to direct traffic, clear drains and check on fire alarms.

“We had lighting strikes in a lot of places around town. There’s no damage as far as I’m aware of, but fire alarms were set off due to power surges,” Dawson said. “It was crazy there for awhile.”

Despite the four inches of water that flooded the Town House basement, Dawson said there was no significant damage. Many items had been removed prior to combat a mold problem.

“We’re drying it out now,” Dawson said.

Library staff are currently assessing the contents of their basement after the flooding, he said.
