A Marion woman has been charged with operating under the influence following a fiery crash near Minot Avenue and Indian Neck Road on Dec. 8.

According to reports, Officer Christopher Corner responded to the scene of the crash around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday where he found a heavily damaged car on fire.

The driver inside, Daicia Rezendes, 28, of Marion, was reportedly unresponsive.

Corner used a fire extinguisher from his cruiser to knock down the flames, pulling Rezendes to safety with the help of Officer Jennifer Braley who also arrived on scene.

The Wareham Fire Department arrived shortly after and extinguished the fire completely.

The two passengers of the other car, who have not be identified, had sustained non-life threatening injuries according to police.

All parties were taken to Tobey Hospital for treatment by Wareham EMS, including Braley who sustained a minor injury at the scene.

“These two officers put themselves in harm’s way to rescue a woman from a burning car,” said Acting Chief John Walcek said, “Chris Corner and Jenn Braley are dedicated police officers and I am very proud of their actions.”

A subsequent investigation revealed that Rezendes had caused the accident that night when she crossed the center line and struck the other car head on.

She is now being summoned to court for operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation.
