Marion woman's skydiving fundraiser won't stay grounded

Tabitha Tripp is no mild-mannered church lady. She’s a highflying daredevil who’s well on her way to earning the nickname “jumping for a cause girl.”

Tripp, a Marion resident, is poised to take her second skydiving jump for charity on September 15.

“There are six of us that are jumping to help Mercy Meals and More,” said Tripp. “It’s a fantastic organization. They try to do as much as they can to help people who are less fortunate.”

The New Bedford ministry serves hundreds of breakfasts to the homeless and hungry each week.

Tripp first got involved with Mercy Meals a few years ago as a volunteer with Fairhaven’s South Coast Community Church and recently joined the organization’s board.

“There are so many people who are one paycheck away from being in a homeless situation. What hurts is seeing families come in and saying, 'I can feed my children or pay the rent,'” she said.

To raise money and awareness for Mercy Meals, Tripp decided to organize a skydive, something she also did last year to raise funds for seniors using Coastline Elderly Services.

“I said to myself, this would be perfect to do for Mercy Meals. I had it in my mind all winter long to get a group of people who want to jump,” she said. “It gets people’s attention.”

The original jump was scheduled for August but was rescheduled due to a rainstorm.

“That’s the way God works,” said Tripp. “In that postponement, two other people came forward and said, 'I want to jump.'”

Tripp said each person will pay for the cost of their jump.

“All the money collected is going directly to Mercy Meals,” said Tripp.

So far, the group has raised more than $4,000, and a good portion of those future breakfasts came from Tripp’s resolve.

“I’m not afraid to go door to door,” she said. Adding, “This is a start. My mind races with what we can do. I’m thinking bigger picture next time would be to do a musical festival.”
