Marion Zoning Board approves Habitat home
The Marion Zoning Board of Appeals has approved Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity's plan to construct its first-ever home in town.
After a 14-day appeal period has ended, Habitat can start clearing the lot, said representative George McTurk.
Of the board's decision, McTurk said, "It's another step, but it's in the right direction."
McTurk added that Habitat is aiming to break ground by May 1 and complete construction by Labor Day.
Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity is the local chapter of the international non-profit organization that serves to provide affordable housing to people who could not afford it.
The single-family ranch home will be constructed at 185 Wareham Road on a 19,000 square-foot lot. Habitat first proposed to build the 1,100 square-foot home in 2009.
The project has also been reviewed by the town's Planning Board, which granted its approval in June.
Habitat representatives have been seeking a special permit from the Zoning Board to bypass local zoning regulations that the home does not meet. The home is not in compliance with a regulation calling for 200 feet of frontage between the home and the street.
In December, an existing structure was torn down by Habitat to make way for the house.
To cut down on electricity costs, solar panels will be installed on the roof of the home.
Habitat is still screening applicants for the home.
