May 22, 2013

In the Mattapoisett annual Town Election on Tuesday, Mary Crain kept her seat on the Planning Board in one of only two contested races.

Crain, who was appointed to fill an empty seat last summer, defeated Paul Osenkowski with 396 votes to 193.

Crain holds a masters in urban and regional planning from Rutgers University and spent more than 10 years working in town planning in Everett, Salem, and Watertown.

She said, “I’d like to see that any kind of necessary development or growth be allowed within certain parameters – growth done cautiously and wisely.”

In the other contested race, William Hubbard won a seat as the Water and Sewer Commissioner with 379 votes compared to Christopher Jaskolka's 246.

There was one question on the ballot regarding road improvements. Mattapoisett voters approved a $200,000 debt exclusion to pay for phase three of the town's five-year road improvement plan with 273 votes for the exclusion and 188 against it.

In uncontested races, incumbent Selectmen Jordan Collyer received 476 votes. Cary LeBlanc received 476 votes for assessor.

Two spaces were open on the Mattapoisett School Committee with incumbent Charles Motta receiving 430 votes and Patrick LeClair receiving 387.

James Dildine and Mary Magee, both incumbents, ran for two open seats for library trustee, getting 415 and 505 votes, respectively.

John Eklund will return for another year as Town Moderator with 494 votes.

For one seat on the Board of Health, incumbent Daniel Lee, Jr. took 483 votes.

Margaret DeMello received 491 votes to stay on the Mattapoisett Housing Authority.

Paul Magee and Keneth Pacheco will both remain constables. Magee received 510 votes and Pacheco received 447.

Robert Martin will keep the position of Herring Inspector with 496 votes. Tree Warden Roland Cote will also keep his position with 503 votes.

William Hall and Michelle Hughes will continue to be on the Community Preservation Committee, with 462 and 471 votes, respectively.

One open position on the Old Rochester Regional District School Committee will not be announced until the write-in candidate has been notified, said Town Clerk Barbara Sullivan.
