MATTAPOISETT — The Board of Selectmen appointed a new full time police officer and promoted Scott LeBlanc to sergeant at its Feb. 26 meeting.

“Everyone’s here for the herring meeting,” one of the Selectmen joked mentioning another meeting scheduled for that night, as they made their way into a room packed with girlfriends, family members and friends there to watch the promotion and appointment.

First Selectmen appointed Charles Tranfaglia as a full time police officer. Tranfaglia graduated from UMass Dartmouth after studying criminal justice, and the Mattapoisett Police Department sponsored him through police academy.

His girlfriend Colby and his mother Sierra were in attendance at the ceremony.

In introducing Scott LeBlanc, who was promoted to sergeant, Police Chief Mary Lyons mentioned that the lifelong Mattapoisett resident has served on the force in some capacity since he was appointed to the reserve in 1998.

Recently, Lyons said, he has been working with the detective division and doing work around the narcotics program. His wife and children were in attendance to see him sworn in.

Selectmen approved both members unanimously.
