Mattapoisett church raises money for mission trip with music
It was a toe-tappin' good time on Saturday evening as two bands performed to raise money for the Mattapoisett Congregational Church's summer mission trip.
David Dunn, Rick Derry and Paul Amenta opened the concert, held in the church's hall, with acoustic numbers. Dunn, a member of the church, will participate in the mission trip to work with The Craddock Center in Cherry Log, Georgia, this summer.
In Cherry Log, more than 25 members of the Mattapoisett church will help launch the Craddock Center's new Children's Enrichment Program, aimed to help impoverished kids in Appalachia.
"We're really excited about taking the ship out of the harbor," said Marc Anderson, who will be part of the group.
The church is hoping to raise $15,000 for the trip, and Anderson said a large part of that will go towards purchasing books for the kids they will meet.
The group will be in Cherry Log June 21-28 and were hoping Saturday's concert would bring in many donations for the trip.
And with the bluegrass duo Gravel Road finishing out the night, people got a good taste of the mountain music that was born out of that region.
Based in New Hampton, New Hampshire, the pair includes Beth Grosart, who grew up in the church, and Chris Little playing original songs, folk tunes and some Johnny Cash.
In addition to the music, the church had a silent auction and snacks to raise funds for the mission trip.
