Mattapoisett crews work to repair Irene damage
Power could be out in town until Wednesday at the earliest, according to Police Chief Mary Lyons. Lyon added, however, some residents may not have power until Friday.
Sunday's effects from Tropical Storm Irene caused extensive wind damage and power outages throughout the region. NSTAR reports 200,000 customers throughout the region are without power as of 8 a.m. today.
Lyons said sections of Beacon Street, Tobey Lane, Baptist Street, Wolf Island, Brandt Island, Aucoot Rd, Main and Driscoll Lane are blocked or partially blocked by debris. Street lights on North Street are also without power.
"A tree did fall onto a car, both on private property," she added. "A home at 10 Pinewood Way and a house on North Street were hit by trees. Â Pinewood was deemed a risk by the Building Inspector. There were a couple boats that did wash up on shore." She said no injuries were reported.
Lyons also added 163 calls for service were logged from midnight Friday to Monday morning.
Multiple crews from town departments were out throughout the day clearing debris and dealing with the storm. Highway Department foreman Rob Daener the damage was widespread.
"We're working with NSTAR crews now," Daener said. "Our priority is getting the water-pumping stations online and clearing the main passageways."
Tropical Storm Irene was downgraded from hurricane status before it hit the region.
