Mattapoisett cub scouts rocket into new school year

There was no shortage of things to do on Thursday night as the Mattapoisett Cub Scouts Pack 53 kick-off their first meeting.

New Cub Master Jeanine McLaughlin welcomed members old and new and encouraged parents to take on leadership with the individual groups, which are divided by age.

"It's a good time spent with your son. I don't know a better thing to do," she said.

After the Pledge of Allegiance, a recitation of the cub scout promise, and a prayer, the kids got to try their hand at scout activities, including a monkey fist toss, a trail mix table, and rocket launching.

The boys were particularly excited about the latter.

"Mine was so fast it lost a sticker!" said Jack Satterley, 9.

The scouts will meet monthly at the Mattapoisett Congregational Church in addition to their den meetings, said McLaughlin. There will also be a number of activities throughout the year.
