Mattapoisett discusses banning nips

Mattapoisett officials have received a request from a member of the public to ban the sale of miniature liquor bottles, also known as nips, in town.

The issue needs further review before it could potentially be brought to Town Meeting voters, Town Administrator Mike Lorenco said.

There would not be enough time to place the issue on this spring’s warrant, he said.

“It needs a little more time to ensure what they’ve written is legal,” he said.

Lorenco also said that he would want to speak with local liquor store owners to better understand their perspectives on this.

“This is likely going to be coming as a petitioned article if we don’t seek to do it as a town,” said Lorenco. “There’s going to be more to come.”

The sale of nips has been banned in a growing number of communities. A ban was recently approved in Wareham and goes into effect in May.

Wareham voters most commonly cited concerns about litter created by the tossing of empty nips on the ground. When Lorenco worked in Eastham, the town banned nips for similar reasons, even going a step further to prohibit the sale of Styrofoam cups.

Liquor store owners in Wareham expressed concerns that banning nips in one town would simply cause people to buy them in neighboring towns where nips are legal.

“We need the time to do our homework,” said Lorenco. “But we’re going to tackle it down the road.”
