Mattapoisett discusses switching to LED lighting
Town Administrator Mike Gagne would like to see Mattapoisett’s 368 street lamps go green.
Currently, the lights use high-pressure sodium bulbs and cost a little more than $3,000 a month, he said.
Gagne has been researching the possibility of replacing the bulbs with longer lasting LED units, which he said provide more direct light and less glare.
In conjunction with the high-pressure sodium lights, Gagne said, “In our business district with outdoor advertising and parking lot lighting, it makes it difficult to see pedestrians cutting across the road.”
He said he would like to start by replacing the 34 lights along Route 6.
“What I’d like to do is approach NSTAR and discuss with them whether or not we might be able to try a pilot program and use the LEDs on Route 6,” said Gagne.
With approval from the Selectmen, Gagne said he would speak with NSTAR.
