Mattapoisett experiences 'bizarre' set of break-ins
Mattapoisett police are urging residents to lock their doors when leaving vehicles unattended following a string of break-ins early Monday morning.
Police Chief Mary Lyons said nine unlocked vehicles were broken into between midnight and 2 a.m. She described the nature of the break-ins as “very bizarre” because iPads, cash and other items weren't stolen.
“Nothing significant was taken from the vehicles,” Lyons said. “It appears [the suspects] were not seeking valuables.”
Instead, the thieves removed a baseball bat, hats and phone chargers. Some of those items were later recovered.
“These weren’t typical break-ins. In one car, items were taken from the glove compartment and put in the back seat,” she said.
The vehicles were parked on Lynfield Lane and in the Village on Pearl Street.
One of the cars was moved from its spot on Pearl Street to the parking lot of St. Anthony’s Church one block over. Lyons said the keys had been left in that vehicle.
She encouraged residents to call the station if they hear noises or suspect a break-in is occurring, regardless of the time: “If it’s 2 a.m. and you hear something, call us at 2 a.m.”
She also cautioned residents to secure their vehicles.
“The best thing for everyone is to lock their doors and remove their valuables,” Lyons said.
