Mattapoisett Fire rescues two, contributes to search for missing boater
The Mattapoisett Fire Department had a busy weekend on the water, rescuing two people and aiding in a search party for a missing boater, in rough seas.
“This weekend was definitely windy, and the water is still really cold,” said Fire Chief Andy Murray.
Just before 7 p.m. on Friday, firefighters responded to a 911 report of someone screaming for help in the harbor. Taking the fire rescue boat, firefighters arrived on the scene seven minutes later and pulled a 67-year-old man out of approximately 55 degree water.
After falling off his moored boat near Noyes Avenue and Dyar Road, Fire Chief Andy Murray said the man was treading water for 15 to 20 minutes before they arrived. He was transported to Town Wharf where EMS and an ambulance were ready to treat the man for hypothermia and exhaustion.
On Saturday and Sunday, Mattapoisett firefighters contributed to a massive search for a missing man whose 33-foot powerboat was discovered operating unmanned in Buzzards Bay. The missing man’s body was found in the Cape Cod Canal on Sunday morning.
Less than a half hour after Mattapoisett firefighters headed back to shore, they were called out again for another stranded boater, this time a 24-year-old man whose boat began taking on water.
The boater called 911 himself and remained on the line, directing rescuers to his location between Strawberry Point and Ned’s Point.
Firefighters threw the man a life ring, pulled him to safety and towed the boat back to shore.
Murray said the boaters rescued in Mattapoisett were not wearing life jackets, and he cautioned people to take note of the weather before heading out on the water.
“People are itching to use their boats,” he said. “People are getting out there, but the weather is not appropriate for it.”
