Mattapoisett Garden Group takes home awards

Nov 30, 2015

The Garden Group division of the Mattapoisett Woman's Club took home two ribbons in competitions this fall.

The group created an entry for the Celebrate the Season event at the Rotch-Jones Duff House in New Bedford. This year, the theme was books and the ladies chose "The Call of the Wild" by Jack London. They decorated their assigned space as a boys bedroom with bear skins, ice fishing gear, antlers and flowers and greens.

Members Sue Mitchell, Susan Perkins and Kathy McAuliffe created the setting and took home the award for third place.

Garden Group members also volunteered to decorate the Mansions for the Christmas Season in Newport. They were invited to enter a mantle decorating competition at Marble House. A team of three took home third place. They choose a blue color scheme for their assigned mantle with gold and white packages and flowers to highlight the mantle, which was in William Vanderbilt Jr.’s room.

The center of the entry was a replica of the car driven by Vanderbilt. The car was built by Garden Group member Claire Keene’s husband, Lauren.

Participating team members were Barbara Van Inwegen, Joan Halter and Claire Keene. Susan Perkins and Lauren Keene also helped on the committee. Their work was awarded a blue ribbon.

The mantle will be on display at Marble House along with several other Newport mansions until Jan. 3.
