Mattapoisett garden tour gets (green) thumbs up

MATTAPOISETT — Tri-Town gardeners got quite a treat on Saturday, June 26 as the Mattapoisett Woman’s Club hosted the second private garden tour of the weekend following the Marion garden tour on Friday.

The Mattapoisett “Glorious Gardens” tour, which featured seven different gardens around town, began at 10 a.m. as a light fog rolled into the harbor, but the weather didn’t seem to put a damper on the event.

“This year it was tough with covid but I think it’s been a very good year,” said Kathy McAuliffe who was on the tour’s organizing committee.

McAuliffe explained that the tour is usually held every other year and was supposed to happen last year but was postponed due to covid restrictions. Consequently, the Mattapoisett and Marion garden tours, which usually alternate year-to-year, fell on the same weekend.

Luckily, said McAuliffe, all the gardens that were scheduled to be toured last year stayed on for this year.

The list included a variety of garden styles and spaces that kept the tour fresh from one stop to another, each offering its own palette of envy-inducing flora.

“I just don’t know how to describe it,” said Jocelyn LaBouliere of the garden at 12 Bay Club Dr. “Everything is just so perfectly aligned.”

“I call it breathtaking,” interjected her husband, Peter LaBouliere, former president of the Wareham Garden Club.

Maria Smith, the owner of the garden, said that the trick is finding the right mix of plants to make sure something is always in bloom throughout the summer.

The Mattapoisett Woman’s Club is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, as well as its 10th garden tour, according to McAuliffe.

The proceeds from the tour help fund the club’s philanthropic pursuits including its annual scholarship program for Mattapoisett residents which provides two $2,000 grants for college-bound students as well as a $1,000 scholarship to a returning student.
