Mattapoisett Halloween Parade draws inventive costumes from kids, adults

MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Police Department held their annual Halloween Parade at Center School on Halloween night, giving children and adults alike the chance to showcase their elaborate costumes and win prizes.

Families began to gather at Center School, where the parade began, a little before 6 p.m. Police handed out glowsticks, and started the parade with a police cruiser and a set of drummers who provided the beat.

After a lap down Barstow Street, along Water Street and back to Center School, the police held their costume contest. Winners were awarded gift certificates to Mattapoisett restaurants, Turk’s and On the Go, or TVs.

For the Pre-K and Kindergarten contest a Pennywise the clown took third place, a stroller rendition of a duck boat (complete with a replica of the World Series Trophy) took second, and a wagon costume of “The First Woman on the Moon” took first place.

After the first and second graders did several laps for the judges to pick costumes a butterfly won third place, a taco won second place and a character from the movie “Coco” won first place.

For the third and fourth graders a detailed rendition of Maleficent took third place, a version of C3PO took second place, and a creative man in the moon costume took first place.

For the fifth and sixth graders the “Chucky” twins took third place, a trick “rubber band man” costume that made the wearer look like he was performing a near impossible back bend took second, and a clever costume that turned the wearer into an entire spaghetti dinner took first.

During the junior high and high school laps dinosaurs predominated, with four or five of them forming a conga line. They failed to nab any prizes, though, as the third place prize went to student who looked like he had a rocket on his back, the second place prize went to a Doctor Who-esque dark angel, and the first place prize went to a duo who dressed as an elaborate cardboard rendition of Ned’s Point and Salty the Seahorse.

“I’m not sure how you’re going to split a TV between the two of you, but hopefully you’re siblings or something and can figure it out,” the announcer joked.

In the adult category a Rubik’s cube took third place, a group costume called the Tipsies took second, and a clever pun costume called “Three Sheets to the Wind,” which featured a trio of windswept and slightly drunk looking adults in sheetlike ponchos, won first place.
