Mattapoisett Harbormaster continues to look for boat stickers

Holdouts on purchasing a boat sticker in Mattapoisett may not have much time left before they face fines of $10 a day.

For the past month, Harbormaster Horace Field and his team have been trying to alert boat owners who do not have a sticker on display that they need to purchase one at the Town Clerk’s office.

Town boating regulations state that “all boats in Mattapoisett water, whether on a mooring or in a slip, must display a boat sticker at all times.”

The Harbormaster’s team has been visiting boats with a printout of the regulations.

“What we do is put this form in a sandwich bag with a little pebble to keep it from blowing out of the boat,” said Field. “Any boat that doesn’t have a sticker gets this form and instruction on what the sticker is.”

So far, Field says people have responded well. Town Clerk Barbara Sullivan agreed, saying most people come in after they receive a notice.

But for those slow to the respond, watch out.

“In a week or so we’ll go around again, and anyone who hasn’t complied will get a fine,” said Field.

Field said he and his team will focus on getting floats registered next.
