Mattapoisett hopes to unlock funds for street improvements

MATTAPOISETT — The town has been compiling road improvement projects, and will send them to the state, hoping to unlock some funding for them.

In 2017, the town approved a municipal bicycle and pedestrian plan, which formed a Complete Streets Work Group to compile a list of 15 to 20 projects that improve connectivity.

The group is named after the state Complete Streets grant, a competitive program which provides towns with projects that are approved as Complete-Streets-worthy up to $400,000 in funding each year.

The projects that the group presented ranged from $35,000 asks to $195,000 requests. Many of the projects deal with connectivity on the section of North Street north of Interstate 195, a section that contains 20% of the town’s homes, but where residents find it difficult and dangerous to walk or bike.

Another project would be a crossing at Brandt Island Road. The town is only asked to cover the design costs for grant projects.

The Mattapoisett Complete Streets Work Group checked in with the Board of Selectmen on Feb. 4 to get approval to send the projects to the state for initial approval.

Selectmen asked how often the grant is likely to get approved. Committee members responded that the process is competitive, and they certainly wouldn’t get $400,000 every year. However Selectman Jordan Collyer said he had heard positive things about the program from other communities of a similar size.

Selectmen approved the request to pass the report on to the state.

Highway Surveyor Barry Denham mentioned that adding sidewalks to Pearl Street from Route 6 to Church Street is one of the projects that he would like to see completed this year.
