Mattapoisett Land Trust to clean up ‘banner corner’

Jun 20, 2012

The Mattapoisett Land Trust is looking to tidy up the corner of Route 6 and North Street.

For over 20 years, the Trust has partnered with the Lion’s Club to manage the sign on that corner, which sits on Land Trust property, said board Treasurer Sandy Hering.

“The Town asked us to do it because the Highway Department was concerned about all the clutter that was accumulating on that intersection,” said Hering.

“Over the years, we keep seeing more accumulation of poles and banners, and even banners posted on the corner when the sign was empty.”

In response to concerns from residents and the Board of Directors, the Trust recently posted new guidelines on their site that detail the use of the space.

Herring said the purpose of the area is for announcements from schools, organizations, nonprofits and the Town, but should not be used for commercial purposes.

“Right now we’re in a grace period,” said Hering. “We haven’t removed or called any organizations and asked them to remove their banners, but in the near future some of the freestanding poles are going to be removed.”

Going forward, she said there will only be two spots on the corner for banners.

“These are good people that are running these events that want to get their events known to people,” said Hering.

“It’s not like we’re trying to be the police of the town. We’re trying to make sure the entrance to our town looks welcoming and pretty.”

Hering said the Trust and Lion’s Club may also landscape the area with flowers.
