Mattapoisett to lease landfill in 2013
Mattapoisett has 120 acres of land availble for solar panels at the former landfill.
If all goes as planned with a photovoltaic array project, the town stands to lower its municipal energy costs by 20 percent
“I’ve had at least half a dozen companies that have come and met with me that are interested in leasing the site,” said Town Administrator Mike Gagne.
The land already has zoning approval and the Board of Health, which runs the Transfer Station on the site, has agreed to the addition of the project.
“The lease payments will go to a solid waste stabilization fund that Town Meeting adopted. The money will be used to defray the expected increase in solid waste costs at SEMASS,” said Gagne.
The town’s 25-year agreement with SEMASS ends soon, and Gagne said the cost of garbage disposal per ton is expected to rise significantly.
The town also hopes to benefit with a 20 percent reduction in energy costs for municipal needs, which would be a boon to the already tight budget.
With the plans and specifications already completed, Gagne expects to put out a bid for proposals in early January.
