Mattapoisett library jams out to the end of summer reading

MATTAPOISETT — Toe Jam Puppet Band showed up to the Mattapoisett Library on Thursday, Aug. 18 to get kids “dancing so fast their heads will explode.”

“The cultural council will reimburse you for any kids that explode,” joked Mr. Vinny of Toe Jam Puppet Band to the parents in the crowd. The Mattapoisett Cultural Council funded this event and many of the band’s other local appearances.

The band’s performance was to celebrate the end of summer reading at the library, which was “very successful,” according to Bethany Viera, director of the children’s library. She said that they had 140 kids signed up in total this year.

Children’s librarian Amanda Lawrence assisted in providing the entertainment, as kids cheered as she went up to the stage to sing the “Scooby Doo” theme song, and showed off her hula-hooping skills.

The lawn was packed with children and parents who spread out blankets to watch the show. However, the kids didn’t stay seated for long, as the band was sure to get them up dancing, chasing giant bubbles, and using their imaginations as they acted like monkeys, trains and cars.

Nixon Forcier, who is in kindergarten, said that he completed all of his summer reading.

Violette Kiselica said her favorite book this summer was “Harry the Dirty Dog,” a book about a dog that really does not want to take a bath.

Kids who entered summer reading were able to fill out a bingo card based on the books they read, which they can enter for raffle prizes from the library.
